When you create a large document with multiple headings in Google Docs, a panel automatically slides out on the left side of the screen. This is the “Document Outline,” designed to help you quickly jump between chapters or sections of a long report.
However, if you are writing a simple essay, a short memo, or if you are simply working on a small laptop screen, this left-hand sidebar takes up valuable horizontal space, pushing your text off-centre and making the interface feel cluttered.
How to Hide the Document Outline Sidebar
You can quickly collapse this sidebar to reclaim your screen space and center your document.
- Open your document in Google Docs.
- Look at the top left corner of the Document Outline sidebar. You will see a small icon that looks like an arrow pointing to the left (Next to the word “Outline”).
- Click this Close document outline arrow.
- The sidebar will instantly slide away, disappearing off the left side of the screen.
How to Remove the Outline Icon Entirely
Even after closing the sidebar, a small floating icon (a bulleted list symbol) remains permanently anchored to the top-left edge of your screen, waiting for you to click it to reopen the outline. If you find this floating icon distracting and want a perfectly clean, minimalist writing interface, you can disable the feature completely from the View menu.
- Look at the top menu bar in Google Docs and click on View.
- In the drop-down menu, look for Show outline. It will currently have a checkmark next to it.
- Click on Show outline to uncheck it.
The floating icon will instantly vanish. Your Google Docs interface is now perfectly clean and distraction-free, giving 100% of the screen space back to your writing.
