If you own an iPhone or iPad alongside your Mac, you may have noticed a strange icon occasionally appearing at the far-right or bottom edge of your Mac’s Dock. It usually looks like a Safari, Mail, or Notes icon with a tiny smartphone badge superimposed over it. If you click it, the Mac opens whatever webpage or document you were just looking at on your phone.
This feature is called “Handoff.” While Apple designed it to create a seamless transition between your devices, it can be a massive privacy risk. If you are sharing your Mac screen during a Zoom meeting, or if someone else in your household uses the computer, they can instantly see exactly what you are browsing on your personal phone just by looking at the Dock. You can completely disable this feature.
How to Disable the Handoff Feature on macOS
You can turn off Handoff directly from the macOS System Settings app.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your screen.
- Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions of macOS).
- Scroll down the left-hand sidebar and click on General.
- In the main window, click on AirDrop & Handoff.
- Look for the toggle switch labelled Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.
- Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.
The change takes effect immediately. Your Mac will stop communicating with your iPhone’s active state. The tiny, badge-marked icons will no longer suddenly pop into your Dock, ensuring that your mobile browsing history remains private and isolated from your desktop computer.
