The Windows 11 taskbar is designed for quick access to your most frequently used applications. However, Microsoft restricts you to only pinning executable apps (like Microsoft Word or Google Chrome). If you try to drag and drop a specific document, such as a daily budget Excel spreadsheet or an important PDF, Windows will not allow you to pin it directly to the taskbar.
Fortunately, there is a simple workaround that tricks Windows into thinking your file is an application, allowing you to pin it permanently for instant access.
How to Pin Any File to the Taskbar
To do this, we need to create a special shortcut on the desktop, pin that shortcut, and then delete the desktop icon.
- Right-click anywhere on your desktop, select New, and then click Shortcut.
- The “Create Shortcut” wizard will appear. Click the Browse button and locate the specific file you want to pin. Click OK.
- Crucial Step: In the text box showing the location of the item, place your cursor at the very beginning of the file path. Type the word
explorerfollowed by a single space.- For example, it should look like this:

- Click Next. Type a name for your shortcut (e.g., “Daily Budget”) and click Finish.
Changing the Icon and Pinning
Because you added “explorer” to the path, the shortcut will have the default yellow folder icon. You will likely want to change this before pinning it.
- Right-click your new desktop shortcut and select Properties.
- Click the Change Icon button. You can browse for an icon file (.ico) or choose from the Windows defaults. Click OK and Apply.
- Right-click the shortcut one last time and select Show more options (if you are on Windows 11), then click Pin to taskbar.
Your specific file is now pinned to the taskbar! When you click it, Windows File Explorer will immediately launch the document in its default application. You can now safely delete the shortcut from your desktop.
