On macOS, the F6 key (or the key featuring a crescent moon icon on newer Magic Keyboards) acts as a dedicated hardware shortcut for “Do Not Disturb” (Focus Mode). Pressing it instantly mutes all incoming notifications, calls, and alerts.
While intended to help you concentrate, its placement on the function row makes it incredibly easy to hit by accident when attempting to adjust keyboard brightness or media controls. If you accidentally trigger this key, you might miss critical emails, Slack messages, or phone calls for hours without realizing your Mac has silently muted the world. If you prefer to manage your Focus modes manually from the Control Center, you can disable this hardware key.
How to Disable the Do Not Disturb Shortcut on a Mac
You can turn off the hardware shortcut directly from the macOS Keyboard settings.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen.
- Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).
- Scroll down the left-hand navigation sidebar and click on Keyboard.
- In the main window on the right, click the button labelled Keyboard Shortcuts…
- In the left-hand pane of the pop-up window, click on Mission Control (or occasionally Keyboard depending on your OS version).
- Look for the item in the right-hand list labelled Turn Do Not Disturb on/off.
- Uncheck the box next to this item to completely unbind the F6/Moon key.
- Click Done.
The shortcut is instantly disabled. Pressing the crescent moon key will no longer activate or deactivate your Focus modes, ensuring you never accidentally silence your important notifications again.
