How to Delete a Google Account

If you created a temporary email address years ago that is now flooded with spam, or if you simply want to completely remove your digital footprint from Google’s ecosystem, you can permanently delete your Google Account.

Warning: This action is permanent and irreversible. Deleting your Google Account does not just delete your Gmail inbox. It permanently destroys your YouTube channel, erases all files in your Google Drive, wipes your Google Photos, and deletes all your saved passwords in Chrome. Before you begin, you should use Google Takeout to download a backup of your data. Once backed up, here is how to delete a Google Account.

Step 1: Access the Data & Privacy Menu

Google does not make the delete button easy to find, as they want to prevent accidental deletions.

1. Open your web browser and go to myaccount.google.com.
2. Log in with the specific account you want to delete. Double-check the profile picture in the top right corner to ensure you are not logged into your primary work or personal account!
3. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Data & privacy.

Step 2: Navigate to the Deletion Option

This page is very long, as it contains all of Google’s data tracking settings.

1. Scroll all the way down past “Things you’ve done and places you’ve been” and “Data from apps and services you use.”
2. Look for a section titled More options near the very bottom of the page.
3. Click on the option labeled Delete your Google Account.

Google will immediately force you to type your password again. This is a critical security measure to prove that you are the legitimate owner of the account, not someone who sat down at an unlocked computer.

Step 3: Confirm and Delete

You are now on the final confirmation screen. Google will present you with a long list of all the specific services and data that will be destroyed (e.g., “Conversations in Gmail: 1,402”, “Photos: 843”).

1. Scroll to the very bottom of this warning page.
2. You must check two boxes to proceed. The first acknowledges that you are still responsible for any pending financial charges (like active Google Play subscriptions). The second confirms that you understand the deletion is permanent.
3. Once both boxes are checked, click the blue Delete Account button.

Your session will immediately end, and you will be kicked back to the login screen. The account, and everything associated with it, is now gone forever.

Can You Recover a Deleted Account?

If you realize you made a terrible mistake, you have a very brief window—usually less than two weeks—to attempt a recovery.

Go to the Google Account Recovery page (accounts.google.com/signin/recovery) and try to log in. If Google has not yet purged the data from their servers, you may be prompted to answer security questions to restore the account. If the system says “Account not found,” the deletion is permanent and unrecoverable.
