AirDrop is arguably one of Apple’s best features, allowing you to seamlessly beam gigabytes of photos and videos between devices in seconds. But when AirDrop suddenly refuses to show your Mac on the receiving list, or when transfers fail halfway through, it is incredibly frustrating.
Because AirDrop relies on a delicate handshake between your Mac’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennas, fixing it usually involves resetting those wireless connections. Here is how to fix AirDrop not working on your Mac.
1. Check Your AirDrop Visibility Settings
The most common reason AirDrop fails is that your Mac is essentially hiding itself from other devices for security reasons.
- Click the Control Center icon in the top right corner of your menu bar (it looks like two toggle switches).
- Click on AirDrop.
- Check your current setting. If it says “Receiving Off,” nobody can send you files.
- If it says “Contacts Only,” your Mac will only appear to people who are physically saved in your Apple Contacts app. (This setting is notoriously buggy).
- The Fix: Change the setting to Everyone (or “Everyone for 10 Minutes” on newer macOS versions). Try sending the file again.
2. Reset Your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
AirDrop uses Bluetooth to discover devices in the room, and then creates a direct, peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection to actually transfer the heavy files. If either of these antennas is misbehaving, AirDrop will fail.
- Open the Control Center.
- Click the Wi-Fi toggle to turn it completely off, wait 5 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Do the exact same thing for the Bluetooth toggle.
This simple “turn it off and on again” routine clears temporary glitches in the macOS networking stack and forces the Mac to broadcast its AirDrop signal fresh.
3. Turn Off Your VPN or Firewall
AirDrop requires a direct, unencrypted local connection to work. If you have strict security software running on your Mac, it might be blocking that direct connection.
- VPNs: If you use NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or a corporate work VPN, turn it off temporarily. VPNs reroute your network traffic, which breaks AirDrop’s local peer-to-peer handshake.
- Mac Firewall: Go to System Settings > Network > Firewall. If your firewall is on, click Options and ensure that “Block all incoming connections” is unchecked. If that box is checked, AirDrop is physically impossible.
4. Check Device Compatibility and Screen Wake
If you are trying to send a file from your iPhone to your Mac, ensure that your Mac is actually awake. AirDrop will not work if the Mac’s screen is asleep or if it is on the lock screen.
Furthermore, keep the devices physically close. While Bluetooth has a range of about 30 feet, AirDrop’s high-speed Wi-Fi transfer works best when the devices are within 3 to 5 feet of each other with no physical obstructions like thick walls between them.
