The Red Squiggly Distraction
Google Docs features a built-in, aggressive spell-checking engine. As you type, it constantly scans your words against its internal dictionary. If it detects a word it doesn’t recognize, it automatically underlines it with a jarring red squiggly line. While this is helpful for catching typos in formal essays, it is incredibly distracting when writing technical documentation containing code variables, drafting fantasy novels with unique character names, or collaborating on medical reports filled with complex terminology. In these scenarios, the document becomes a sea of red ink, making it difficult to read and focus on the actual content structure.
Hiding Spelling Errors Globally
To stop Google Docs from automatically underlining spelling errors with red squiggly lines, you must disable the real-time visual spelling suggestions within the View menu.
Open the Google Doc that is currently covered in red underlines. Navigate to the top menu bar and click on Tools. In the drop-down menu, hover your mouse over Spelling and grammar to expand the sub-menu. Look for the option labeled Show spelling suggestions. By default, this option will have a checkmark next to it, indicating that it is active. Click on Show spelling suggestions to uncheck it and disable the feature. The interface will instantly update, removing every red squiggly line from your document, giving you a clean, distraction-free workspace. Note that disabling this only hides the visual underlines; if you need to run a final proofread later, you can still manually trigger the spell checker by going to Tools > Spelling and grammar > Spelling and grammar check.
