The Translation Interruption
Google Chrome features deep integration with Google Translate. By default, whenever you visit a webpage that is written in a language different from your operating system’s default language, Chrome will automatically drop a small popup from the address bar (or a banner at the top of the screen) asking if you would like to translate the page into your native language.
While this is incredibly useful for casually browsing international sites, it can be extremely annoying for bilingual or multilingual users who frequently read content in multiple languages and do not need assistance. Constantly dismissing the translation prompt for languages you already understand disrupts the reading experience. You can disable this automatic offer to translate entirely.
How to Disable Automatic Translation Popups
You can turn off the translation offers in Chrome’s Language settings.
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click the three vertical dots (Menu button) in the top-right corner of the window.
- Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
- In the left-hand sidebar of the Settings page, click on Languages.
- Scroll down to the “Google Translate” section.
- Look for the toggle switch labelled Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language you read (or “Use Google Translate”).
- Toggle the switch to the Off position.
Google Chrome will no longer interrupt you with automatic popups when visiting foreign language websites. If you ever do need to translate a specific page, you can still right-click anywhere on the webpage and select “Translate to [Your Language]” from the context menu to force a manual translation.
