The ‘@’ Symbol Intrusion
Google Docs is heavily integrated with the broader Google Workspace ecosystem. To facilitate this, Google introduced “Smart Chips.” Whenever you type the `@` symbol followed by a few letters, Google Docs automatically halts your typing and displays a large, interactive dropdown menu suggesting you insert a Smart Chip. This menu will try to autofill contacts, files from your Google Drive, calendar events, or specific dates. While this is excellent for project management documents, if you are a programmer drafting technical documentation (where `@` is frequently used in code snippets) or simply trying to type an email address, this automatic, screen-covering menu is incredibly disruptive.
Dismissing the Smart Chip Menu
Unfortunately, Google does not currently offer a master toggle switch in the Settings menu to permanently disable the `@` menu trigger. To stop Google Docs from automatically creating Smart Chips when you type, you must alter your immediate typing workflow.
Because you cannot turn the feature off globally, you must learn how to quickly dismiss it without breaking your typing rhythm. When you type an `@` symbol and the Smart Chip suggestion menu automatically pops up, do not reach for your mouse, and do not press the Spacebar immediately (which can sometimes select the first option). The fastest and most reliable way to banish the menu is to simply press the Escape (Esc) key on your keyboard. This instantly closes the suggestion box, leaving your `@` symbol exactly as you typed it, and allows you to continue typing the rest of your word or code string without Google Docs attempting to format it into an interactive chip.
