The Unwanted Uppercase
Google Docs acts as an aggressive proofreader, constantly monitoring your keystrokes to enforce standard grammatical rules. One of its core rules is ensuring every new sentence begins with a capital letter. The moment you type a period, press space, and type a letter, Docs automatically forces that letter to uppercase. While beneficial for standard prose, this auto-capitalization is a major hindrance when writing technical documents, software documentation, or formatting specific brand names (like “iPhone” or “eBay”) where forcing a capital letter at the start of a sentence breaks the required styling or syntax.
Taking Manual Control
To ensure your keystrokes are recorded exactly as typed and stop Google Docs from automatically capitalizing words at the beginning of sentences, you must disable the auto-capitalization preference.
Open your Google Docs document. Navigate to the top menu bar and click on Tools. From the drop-down menu, select Preferences. A dialogue box will appear on your screen. Ensure you are on the General tab (it should be the default selection on the left). Look through the list of checkboxes for the option labelled Automatically capitalize words. By default, this box is checked. Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark, completely disabling the feature. Click the blue OK button at the bottom right to apply the change. Docs will no longer interfere with your casing choices.
