The Printing Disaster
Google Docs is designed to be a universal word processor, but it often struggles with regional defaults. If you live outside of North America (where A4 is the standard paper size), you might find that Google Docs constantly defaults to the US “Letter” size (8.5 x 11 inches) for every new document. Conversely, if you receive a document from an international colleague, Docs might automatically format it to A4. This automatic page sizing becomes a massive problem when you finally hit “Print.” A document formatted for US Letter will print incorrectly on A4 paper, leading to cut-off margins, misaligned headers, and wasted ink.
Establishing a Standard Format
To guarantee that your documents print correctly every time and stop Google Docs from automatically changing or defaulting to the wrong page size, you must establish a permanent “Page Setup” default.
Open a completely blank Google Doc. Go to the top menu bar, click File, and scroll down to select Page setup. A dialogue box will appear. Look for the dropdown menu labelled Paper size. Click it and select your region’s exact requirement (for example, change it from “Letter (8.5″ x 11″)” to “A4 (210 mm x 297 mm)”). Once you have selected the correct size, do not just click OK. Look at the bottom left of the dialogue box and click the button labelled Set as default. Google Docs will ask you to confirm that you want this page setup applied to all new documents. Click OK. From now on, your documents will be strictly locked to your chosen physical paper size, preventing any future printing disasters.
