The Plug and Play Delay
Windows 11 features a robust search indexer that constantly scans your hard drives so you can find files instantly using the Start menu. However, this feature becomes a significant nuisance when you frequently use USB flash drives or external hard drives to transfer data. By default, the moment you plug in a removable drive, Windows 11 may attempt to index its entire contents. This background scanning process locks the drive in a “busy” state, making it impossible to safely eject the USB stick without risking data corruption, and forces you to wait while the system parses thousands of files you only intended to access temporarily.
Excluding External Media
To ensure your USB drives remain fast, safely ejectable, and stop Windows 11 from automatically indexing your removable drives, you must explicitly exclude them within the Search settings.
Plug in the external drive you wish to exclude. Press the Windows key, type Settings, and press Enter. In the left-hand navigation pane, select Privacy & security, and then click on Searching Windows on the right side. Scroll down to the “Exclude folders from enhanced search” section and click the Add an excluded folder button. A file browser window will appear. Select your connected USB drive (e.g., “D:\” or “E:\”) and click Select Folder. This instructs the Windows Search Indexer to completely ignore this specific drive, ensuring it will never automatically scan it again when connected.
