The Cluttered Sidebar
Google Docs features a highly useful “Document Outline” tool, visible as a sidebar on the left side of the screen. This outline is designed to act as a clickable table of contents, allowing you to jump quickly between sections of a long document. However, the outline is generated algorithmically. Google Docs constantly scans your text, and anytime you format a line using one of the built-in “Heading” styles (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.), it automatically adds that text to the outline. If you use Heading styles purely for visual formatting (e.g., making a quote stand out or enlarging a minor note) rather than structural organization, your Document Outline will quickly become cluttered with useless, automatic entries.
Removing Outline Entries
To maintain a clean, functional navigation sidebar and stop Google Docs from automatically adding specific headers to the document outline, you must manually remove them from the index.
You cannot disable the automatic outline generation globally if you intend to use the built-in Heading styles. Google Docs fundamentally links the two features. To fix a cluttered outline, you must curate it manually. Open the Document Outline sidebar (if it is not visible, click View > Show outline). Hover your mouse cursor over the specific entry in the outline sidebar that you want to remove. An ‘X’ icon (Remove from outline) will appear to the right of the text within the sidebar. Click the ‘X’. The entry will instantly vanish from the outline, but the actual text within your document will retain its Heading formatting perfectly. You must repeat this for every unwanted automatic entry.
