When you first start using Google Drive, simply uploading individual files into the main “My Drive” area seems fine. However, as your cloud storage fills up with hundreds of documents, spreadsheets, and photos, finding a specific file becomes a nightmare. To keep your digital workspace organized, you need to use folders.
Creating folders in Google Drive works exactly like creating folders on your Windows PC or Mac. You can create as many folders as you need, and even nest folders inside other folders. Here is how to do it.
Method 1: Creating a Folder on the Desktop Website
If you are using a computer, organizing your Drive via the web browser is the most efficient method.
- Open your web browser and navigate to drive.google.com. Log in to your Google account if prompted.
- Look at the top-left corner of the screen, just beneath the Google Drive logo. Click the large button with the plus sign labeled + New.
- From the drop-down menu that appears, select New folder (it is usually the very first option).
- A small pop-up window will appear in the center of the screen asking you to name the folder. Delete the text “Untitled folder” and type a descriptive name (e.g., “2024 Tax Returns” or “Project Assets”).
- Click the blue Create button.
The new folder will instantly appear in your “My Drive” list. You can now click and drag any existing files directly into this new folder to organize them.
Pro Tip: You can also create a new folder instantly by simply right-clicking anywhere on the blank white space inside your Google Drive and selecting “New folder” from the context menu.
Method 2: Creating a Folder on the Mobile App
If you are away from your computer, you can easily organize your files using the official Google Drive app for iOS or Android.
- Open the Google Drive app on your smartphone or tablet.
- Look at the bottom right corner of your screen. You will see a large, floating button with a multi-colored Plus (+) symbol. Tap it.
- A “Create new” menu will slide up from the bottom of the screen. Tap the Folder icon.
- Type a name for your new folder using your phone’s keyboard.
- Tap Create in the top right corner of the menu.
How to Color-Code Your Folders
By default, every folder you create in Google Drive is a standard grey color. If you have dozens of folders, finding the right one can still be difficult. To make your most important folders stand out visually, you can change their color.
- On the desktop website, right-click the folder you just created.
- Hover your mouse over the Organize option in the menu.
- A palette of colors will appear. Click on a color (like red for urgent documents or green for financial records).
- The folder icon will instantly change to your chosen color, making it much easier to spot at a glance.
