Sometimes a website updates its design, but your browser continues loading an older, broken version of the page. This happens because your browser stores (caches) older files to make websites load faster. While you could clear your entire browser cache, that would log you out of other websites and slow down your browsing. Here is how to force Google Chrome to clear the cache for just one specific website.
Method 1: The “Hard Reload” Trick (Easiest)
Google Chrome has a hidden menu specifically designed for developers to instantly bypass the cache for a single page. This works on both Windows and Mac.
- Navigate to the specific webpage that is broken or outdated.
- Open Chrome’s Developer Tools:
- Windows: Press F12 (or Ctrl + Shift + I).
- Mac: Press Option + Command + I.
- A complex panel of code will open on the right side of your screen. You do not need to touch anything in this panel.
- With the Developer Tools open, right-click (or click and hold) the circular Reload button next to your address bar.
- A secret menu will drop down. Select Empty Cache and Hard Reload.
The page will refresh, downloading fresh files directly from the server. You can now close the Developer Tools panel.
Method 2: Deleting Specific Site Data
If the hard reload does not fix the issue, you can manually delete all cookies and cached data stored specifically for that domain.
- Navigate to the website you want to fix.
- Click the small Lock icon (or the site information icon) located on the far-left side of the URL in the address bar.
- Select Site settings from the dropdown menu. (In newer versions of Chrome, you might need to click Cookies and site data > Manage on-device site data).
- A new settings tab will open showing the specific permissions for that website.
- Look for the section labeled “Usage” which displays how much data the site is storing. Click the Clear data button next to it.
- Close the settings tab, return to the website, and refresh the page.
