If you have a long flight ahead of you or you are commuting through a subway system with notoriously bad cellular reception, streaming YouTube videos is impossible. To solve this, Google offers a native offline downloading feature, allowing you to save high-definition videos directly to your device’s local storage while you are on Wi-Fi, and watch them later completely devoid of an internet connection. However, this feature is strictly paywalled; you must be an active subscriber to the YouTube Premium service to use it.
How to Download a Video for Offline Viewing
The download process is built directly into the standard YouTube mobile app for iOS and Android, and the desktop web browser interface.
- Open the YouTube app on your smartphone or tablet, ensuring you are logged into your Premium account.
- Navigate to the specific video you want to watch offline and begin playing it.
- Look directly beneath the video player, below the channel name. You will see a horizontal row of action buttons (Like, Dislike, Share).
- Swipe horizontally across these buttons to scroll through them until you see the Download button (it looks like a downward-pointing arrow).
- Tap Download.
- A small menu will instantly appear asking you to choose your preferred video quality (e.g., 720p or 1080p). Higher quality videos will consume significantly more of your device’s storage space.
- Select your quality and tap Download to confirm.
The icon below the video will change to a blue circle indicating the download progress. Once it turns into a solid black circle with a checkmark, the file is securely saved to your local device.
How to Find and Watch Your Downloaded Videos
When you enter airplane mode or lose cellular reception, you can no longer search the main YouTube homepage.
- Open the YouTube app while offline. A banner at the bottom will warn you that you have “No Connection.”
- Tap on the You tab (or “Library” on older app versions) in the bottom right corner of the navigation bar.
- Look for the section labeled Downloads.
- Tap on Downloads to open a list of every video you have saved to your device.
- Tap on any video to begin watching it immediately, with zero buffering or ads.
Important Note: Downloaded videos do not stay on your device forever. To prevent piracy and verify your Premium subscription remains active, your device must connect to the internet at least once every 29 days, or YouTube will automatically delete the offline files.
