How to Automatically Turn Off the Windows 11 Display When Not in Use to Save Power

Leaving your computer monitor powered on while you are away from your desk is a significant waste of electricity and, in the case of OLED panels, can lead to permanent screen burn-in. While you could manually press the physical power button on your monitor every time you step away, it is far more efficient to let the operating system handle it. Windows 11 allows you to configure aggressive power-saving timers that automatically turn off the display signal after a set period of inactivity.

Accessing Windows 11 Power Settings

Microsoft has streamlined the power management interface in Windows 11, moving these controls away from the legacy Control Panel and into the modern Settings app.

  1. Click the Start button on your taskbar.
  2. Click the gear icon to open the Settings app. Alternatively, press Windows Key + I on your keyboard.
  3. In the left-hand navigation pane, ensure System is selected.
  4. In the main window, click on Power & battery (or simply Power if you are using a desktop computer without a battery).
  5. Locate the Screen and sleep section and click on it to expand the dropdown menus.

Configuring the Display Timers

Depending on your device type, you will see either two or four distinct dropdown menus. Laptops feature separate controls for when the device is running on battery power versus when it is plugged into a wall outlet.

The options related specifically to the monitor are labeled:

  • On battery power, turn off my screen after
  • When plugged in, turn off my screen after

Click the dropdown menu next to each option to select a timeframe. For laptops running on battery power, a shorter timeframe (such as 3 to 5 minutes) is highly recommended to preserve battery life. For desktop computers or laptops plugged into the wall, a timeframe of 10 to 15 minutes offers a good balance between convenience and power savings.

Screen Off vs. Sleep Mode

Directly beneath the screen timeout settings, you will notice identical settings for putting the device to sleep. It is important to understand the difference between these two actions:

  • Turning off the screen: Windows cuts the video signal to the monitor, causing the screen to go black and enter a low-power standby state. However, the computer itself remains fully awake. Background downloads, music playback, and network file transfers will continue uninterrupted.
  • Putting the device to sleep: Windows suspends the entire operating system to RAM, pausing all background tasks, stopping downloads, and silencing audio.

For the best experience, configure your screen to turn off earlier than the computer goes to sleep (e.g., turn off the screen after 10 minutes, but go to sleep after 30 minutes). Once the screen has turned off automatically, simply moving your mouse or pressing any key on your keyboard will instantly wake the display back up.
