Whether you are drafting an academic research essay with strict submission guidelines, writing a concise editorial column, or adhering to character limitations for marketing copy, tracking text length is an everyday writing requirement. While Google Docs has always provided a standard dialogue to inspect total words and characters, continually opening menus interrupts writing momentum. Google Docs includes a persistent real-time word count overlay that updates dynamically on screen as you type.
Checking Instant Word and Character Metrics via Menus
To inspect a comprehensive statistical breakdown of your entire document at any time:
- Open your document in Google Docs on any desktop web browser.
- Click the Tools menu located in the top navigation bar.
- Select Word count from the drop-down list.
- Alternatively, press the keyboard shortcut:
Ctrl + Shift + Con Windows and ChromeOS, orCommand + Shift + Con macOS.
Google Docs displays a dialogue summarizing four key metrics: Pages, Words, Characters, and Characters excluding spaces. Click OK to dismiss the box.
Pinning the Real-Time Word Count Overlay While Typing
To keep your word count permanently visible on screen without repeatedly opening dialogues:
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + C(orCommand + Shift + C) to launch the Word count dialogue. - At the bottom of the dialogue window, check the box labelled Display word count while typing.
- Click OK.
A compact, floating badge appears in the bottom-left corner of your document window, showing the total number of words. As you compose sentences, delete paragraphs, or paste text, the counter updates in real time.
Switching Between Words, Characters, and Pages in the Badge
The floating tracker badge can be configured to display different metrics based on your project goals:
- Click to Toggle: Click the small downward arrow on the floating badge in the bottom-left corner.
- Select Metric: Choose between Pages, Words, Characters, or Characters excluding spaces. The badge will switch its primary display to your selected preference.
- Selected Text Word Count: Highlight any specific sentence or section of paragraphs with your cursor. The badge immediately updates to reflect the count of that highlighted excerpt relative to the total document (for example, “142 of 1,250 words”).
- Hiding the Counter: To remove the overlay and return to an unobstructed canvas, click the badge arrow and select Hide word count.
