The Phantom Space
Google Docs is a cloud-based word processor that defaults to a “Paginated” view, meaning it attempts to simulate how the document will look when printed on standard A4 or Letter-sized paper. As you type and reach the bottom margin of the current virtual page, Docs automatically generates a new, blank page and pushes your cursor onto it. This is standard behavior. However, sometimes users find that Docs seems to be automatically adding extra, blank pages at the end of their document or between paragraphs for no apparent reason, resulting in a document that prints with several wasted sheets of paper.
Removing Hidden Formatting Breaks
Google Docs does not randomly add pages; to stop it from automatically creating unwanted blank pages, you must identify and remove the hidden formatting commands (like section breaks or excessive margins) causing the behavior.
The most common culprit is an accidental page break. Click at the very top of the unwanted blank page and press the Backspace (or Delete) key multiple times until the cursor jumps back to the end of the text on the previous page. If this doesn’t work, you may have inserted a Section Break. Go to the View menu and ensure Show non-printing characters is checked (if available) to see hidden breaks, or simply click at the end of the text before the blank page and hit Delete to pull the formatting up. Finally, check your margins. Go to File > Page setup. If your bottom margin is set unusually high (e.g., 3 inches), Docs will force text onto a new page much earlier than expected. Reset the margins to the standard 1 inch to resolve the issue.
