How to Block Window Management (Multiple Displays) Globally in Google Chrome

The Multi-Monitor Exploit

Google Chrome supports an advanced API known as Window Management. This API allows web applications to detect exactly how many physical monitors are plugged into your computer, their exact resolutions, and their physical layout on your desk. The website can then programmatically open new browser windows and force them to appear on specific screens. While useful for web-based financial trading dashboards, it is a significant privacy vulnerability. Malicious websites can exploit this to fingerprint your hardware setup or force intrusive pop-ups onto your secondary displays where you might not notice them. You must paralyze this API.

How to Block Window Management Globally

You can permanently sever the browser’s ability to map your physical monitors via Chrome’s Site Settings.

  1. Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
  2. Click the three vertical dots (â‹®) in the top right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy and security.
  4. In the main window, click on Site settings.
  5. Scroll down to the “Permissions” heading and click to expand Additional permissions.
  6. Click on Window management.
  7. Under the “Default behavior” heading, select the radio button for “Don’t allow sites to manage windows on all your displays.”

Hardware Isolation

The change takes effect instantly. Google Chrome will completely sever its internal connection to your operating system’s display driver abstraction layer. The browser is now permanently blind to your multi-monitor setup. If a website attempts to execute a script to detect secondary screens or spawn windows on them, the API call will instantly auto-reject in the background, returning a null value. Websites will be strictly confined to whatever single screen the main browser window is currently residing on, guaranteeing absolute control over your desktop environment.
