How to Disable Payment Method Autofill in Google Chrome

The Frictionless Checkout Risk

Google Chrome features a built-in payment manager designed to speed up online shopping. When you purchase an item on a new website, Chrome will often throw a pop-up window asking, “Save card?” If you click yes, the browser securely stores your credit card number. The next time you encounter a checkout form anywhere on the web, Chrome will automatically attempt to inject your credit card details into the page with a single click. While convenient, this “frictionless” checkout is highly dangerous if you share your computer with children or roommates, as they could easily purchase items using your saved data. You must disable the autofill engine.

How to Turn Off Payment Autofill

You can permanently revoke Chrome’s ability to inject financial data via the Payment methods settings.

  1. Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
  2. Click the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Autofill and passwords.
  4. In the main window, click on Payment methods.
  5. Locate the master toggle switch labeled “Save and fill payment methods.”
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the grey position).

Manual Entry Only

The change is instantaneous. Google Chrome will completely shut down its financial injection engine. The browser will never again prompt you to save a new credit card after a purchase. Furthermore, even if you have old cards previously saved in the browser, Chrome will refuse to automatically fill them into checkout forms. You must now manually type your credit card number for every online purchase, guaranteeing total control over your financial transactions.
