The Auto-Generation Vector
Google Chrome defaults to a highly aggressive stance when you attempt to register for a new website. Whenever you click inside a blank password field, Chrome immediately intercepts the form and generates a complex, random string of characters, forcefully suggesting you use its generated password. For users who rely on dedicated password managers (such as 1Password, Bitwarden, or LastPass), this native generation tool is extremely disruptive, frequently blocking the dropdown menu of your chosen third-party extension.
How to Disable the Password Generator
You can instruct Chrome to stop intercepting registration forms, allowing your third-party tools to handle password creation seamlessly.
1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the extreme top-right corner to open the main menu.
3. Select Settings.
4. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Autofill and passwords.
5. Click on Google Password Manager, which will open the dedicated manager in a new tab.
6. In the left-hand menu of this new tab, click Settings.
7. Scroll down to find the toggle switch labelled Offer to save passwords and turn it Off.
8. Although there is no specific isolated toggle for just the generator, disabling the core “Offer to save passwords” feature completely disables the native generation prompt alongside it.
Chrome will no longer interfere when you click on password creation fields, ensuring a clean interface for your preferred security software.
