How to Enable Parallel Downloading in Google Chrome to Speed Up Downloads

If you frequently download large files such as operating system ISOs, video files, or massive ZIP archives, you might notice that Google Chrome does not always maximize your available internet bandwidth. By default, Chrome establishes a single connection to the server hosting the file. However, you can significantly accelerate your download speeds by enabling a hidden experimental feature called Parallel Downloading.

What is Parallel Downloading?

Parallel downloading works by breaking a single large file into multiple smaller “chunks.” Chrome then opens multiple simultaneous connections to the server to download these chunks at the exact same time, rather than downloading the file sequentially from start to finish. Once all the chunks are downloaded, Chrome seamlessly stitches them back together into the final file.

How to Enable Parallel Downloading via Chrome Flags

Because this is a developer-level feature, it is hidden inside Chrome’s experimental “flags” menu and is not accessible through the standard settings page.

  1. Open Google Chrome on your Windows, Mac, or Linux computer.
  2. Click on the URL address bar at the top of the browser.
  3. Type the following path exactly as written and press Enter:

    chrome://flags/#enable-parallel-downloading
  4. You will be taken to a hidden developer menu. The setting for Parallel downloading will be highlighted in yellow at the top of the page.
  5. Click the dropdown menu next to it (which is likely set to “Default”) and change it to Enabled.
  6. A prompt will appear at the bottom of the screen stating “Your changes will take effect the next time you relaunch Chrome.” Click the blue Relaunch button.

When Chrome reopens, the feature will be active. Try downloading a large file; if the server hosting the file supports multiple connections, you should see a noticeable decrease in your total download time.
