How to Add a Border to a Picture in Microsoft Word

Inserting a picture into a Microsoft Word document is a great way to break up large blocks of text. However, if the edges of the picture are white, it can easily bleed into the background of the page, making the layout look messy and unprofessional.

To fix this, you can quickly add a clean, customizable border around any image.

How to Add a Basic Border

  1. Open your document and click directly on the picture you want to edit.
  2. Notice that a new tab called Picture Format appears at the top of the ribbon. Click it.
  3. Look for the Picture Styles group in the middle of the ribbon.
  4. Click the Picture Border button (it has a small icon of a pencil underlining a square).
  5. A color palette will appear. Click on any color (such as Black or Dark Blue) to instantly apply a solid border to the image.

How to Change the Thickness (Weight) of the Border

By default, Word applies a very thin, 3/4-point line. If you want the border to stand out more (like a picture frame), you need to increase its weight.

  1. Click the picture.
  2. Click the Picture Format tab.
  3. Click the Picture Border button again.
  4. Hover your mouse over the Weight option.
  5. A side menu will appear showing various line thicknesses, ranging from 1/4 pt to 6 pt.
  6. Click on a thicker option, such as 3 pt, to create a bold, visible frame.

How to Make a Dashed or Dotted Border

If you are designing a coupon that needs to be cut out, or if you just want a more creative look, you can change the solid line into dashes or dots.

  1. Click the picture.
  2. Click the Picture Format tab.
  3. Click the Picture Border button.
  4. Hover your mouse over the Dashes option.
  5. Select one of the dashed or dotted line styles from the menu.

If you change your mind and want to completely remove the frame, simply click the Picture Border button again and select No Outline from the color menu. The image will return to its original, borderless state.
