How to Block Microphone Access Globally in Google Chrome

The Audio Surveillance Risk

Modern web browsers feature an advanced audio API that allows websites to access your computer’s physical microphone. While this is necessary for browser-based video conferencing tools like Google Meet or Zoom, it is a massive security risk. If you accidentally grant microphone permissions to a malicious website, that site can silently record your physical surroundings and conversations as long as the tab remains open. If you use dedicated desktop applications for your video calls and have absolutely zero need for websites to listen to you, you must force Google Chrome to completely sever its connection to your audio hardware.

How to Block Microphone Access Globally

You can permanently lock the browser out of your microphone via the Site Settings.

  1. Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
  2. Click the three vertical dots (â‹®) in the top right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy and security.
  4. In the main window, click on Site settings.
  5. Under the “Permissions” heading, click on Microphone.
  6. Under the “Default behavior” heading, select the radio button for “Don’t allow sites to use your microphone.”

Hardware Lockdown

The change takes effect instantly. Google Chrome will completely sever its internal connection to the Windows or macOS audio driver stack. The browser will instantly auto-reject every single request from any website attempting to activate your microphone. You will never see a permission pop-up, and you can browse the internet with the absolute guarantee that no web application can eavesdrop on your physical environment.
