How to Disable the Google Chrome Side Panel

The Invasive Side Panel

Google Chrome features a unified Side Panel designed to house bookmarks, reading lists, history, and search companions. While some users find this persistent right-hand column useful for quick access, others find it visually cluttered and a waste of valuable screen real estate—especially on smaller laptop displays. If you prefer a cleaner, traditional browsing experience, you can disable the Side Panel entirely by modifying the browser’s underlying experimental configuration flags.

Modifying Chrome Flags

To disable the feature, open a new tab in Google Chrome and type chrome://flags into the address bar, then press Enter. This will load the advanced configuration page. In the search box at the top of the page, type Side panel.

You will see several options related to the side panel architecture. Look specifically for the flag named Side panel (or in newer versions, flags related to the specific side panel UI components). Change the dropdown menu next to the relevant flag from Default to Disabled. Chrome will prompt you to relaunch the browser for the changes to take effect. Once restarted, the Side Panel icon will be removed from your toolbar, and the interface will return to a standard, full-width layout.
