The Constant Pop-ups
Modern web browsers have evolved to act more like operating systems, allowing websites to send push notifications directly to your desktop. Google Chrome facilitates this by default. When you visit a new news site, blog, or online store, the website will often immediately trigger a pop-up near the address bar asking, “Show notifications?” If you accidentally click “Allow,” that website now has the power to push alerts, advertisements, and breaking news updates directly to your screen, even when you aren’t actively looking at the browser. This quickly results in a highly distracting, cluttered desktop experience.
Blocking Notification Requests Globally
To silence the constant interruptions and stop Google Chrome from automatically showing desktop notifications (and asking permission to do so), you must revoke notification privileges at the browser level.
Click the three vertical dots (the customize menu) in the extreme top-right corner of the Chrome window and select Settings. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Privacy and security. In the main panel, click on Site settings. Scroll down to the “Permissions” section and click on Notifications. At the top of this page, you will see the master behavior setting. To completely stop the annoying pop-ups and block all future desktop alerts, select the bottom radio button: Don’t allow sites to send notifications. Chrome will now silently reject all notification requests in the background. (If you want to revoke access for sites you previously allowed, scroll down to the “Allowed to send notifications” list, click the three dots next to each URL, and select “Remove”).
