Modern smartphones are designed to constantly demand your attention. Between the vibrant colors, the endless scroll of social media feeds, and the constant barrage of notification chimes, simply putting your phone down and going to sleep is a genuine struggle for millions of people.
To help combat this digital addiction, Google built a powerful suite of Digital Wellbeing tools directly into the Android operating system. The most effective of these tools is “Bedtime Mode.” When activated, this mode strips the color from your screen, mutes your notifications, and physically changes how your phone behaves to actively discourage late-night scrolling.
This guide explains how to configure and enable Bedtime Mode on your Android device to improve your sleep hygiene.
How to Access the Digital Wellbeing Menu
Bedtime Mode is not located in the standard Display or Sound settings; it is part of Google’s dedicated wellness suite.
- Open the Settings app on your Android phone.
- Scroll down until you find the section labeled Digital Wellbeing & parental controls and tap it.
- Look for the section titled “Ways to disconnect” and tap on Bedtime mode.
How to Configure the Bedtime Routine
To make the feature effective, you need to tell your phone when you actually intend to go to sleep.
- Inside the Bedtime mode menu, tap on Routine.
- You have three choices for how the mode activates:
- Use a schedule: You manually set the exact times (e.g., Turn on at 10:30 PM, turn off at 6:30 AM). You can also select specific days of the week so it does not trigger on the weekend.
- Turn on while charging: If your schedule is unpredictable, you can set the mode to only activate if you plug the phone in after a specific time (e.g., anytime after 11:00 PM).
- Off (Manual only): The mode will never turn on automatically; you must manually toggle it from the Quick Settings menu.
How to Customize What Bedtime Mode Does
The real power of Bedtime Mode lies in how it alters your phone’s behavior. Tap the Customize button to adjust the following settings:
- Grayscale: This is the most crucial setting. When enabled, your phone screen turns entirely black and white. Removing the vibrant red notification badges and the colorful allure of Instagram makes the phone incredibly boring to look at, naturally reducing your desire to keep scrolling.
- Keep the screen dark: This ensures your lock screen background turns pitch black, preventing the phone from lighting up the room if you accidentally tap the screen in the middle of the night.
- Do Not Disturb: This automatically mutes all incoming texts, emails, and app notifications. You can tap into this setting to allow emergency calls from specific family members to break through the silence.
By scheduling Bedtime Mode to trigger 30 minutes before you intend to sleep, you create a powerful visual and functional cue that it is time to put the device down and disconnect for the night.
