While responsive mobile websites provide streamlined navigation on small screens, mobile versions frequently omit advanced administrative portals, data tables, desktop web apps, and full document editors. With the increasing prevalence of large-screen smartphones, foldable displays, and Android tablets, continually tapping the three-dot menu and ticking “Desktop site” on every new tab becomes tedious.
Google Chrome for Android includes a native configuration setting that requests the full desktop layout of all websites by default, complete with per-site exception rules.
Enabling Desktop Site Globally in Chrome for Android
To configure Chrome to always load desktop versions across all browsing tabs:
- Open the Chrome app on your Android device.
- Tap the More options button (the three vertical dots
â‹®) in the top-right corner of the browser. - Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- Scroll down to the Advanced section and tap Site settings.
- Scroll down and tap Desktop site.
- Toggle the switch labelled Desktop site to the On position.
Once activated, Chrome transmits a desktop User-Agent header and expands its virtual viewport width on every newly opened domain, ensuring you receive the uncompressed desktop interface.
Adding Exceptions for Specific Mobile Websites
Certain websites, such as mobile banking portals or responsive web utilities, may display awkwardly in desktop view on a smartphone screen. Chrome allows you to whitelist individual sites so they continue loading their mobile layout:
- In Chrome Settings > Site settings > Desktop site, tap ADD SITE EXCEPTION.
- Enter the domain name (for example,
m.bank.comorexample.com). - Choose whether to allow or block desktop mode for that domain, then tap Add.
Quickly Toggling Desktop Mode on an Active Tab
If you encounter a page that requires a temporary mobile view without altering your global settings, simply tap the three-dot menu â‹® on the current page and uncheck Desktop site. Chrome will refresh the active tab in mobile view while retaining the global desktop preference for subsequent browsing.
