How to Change Default USB Configuration on Android to Automatically Enable File Transfer

Whenever you connect your Android smartphone to a Windows PC or Mac using a USB cable, the operating system defaults to “No data transfer” (Charging only) for security reasons. While this default protects your device from malicious public charging kiosks, it becomes an annoying chore when you frequently connect your phone to your personal computer to transfer photos, music, and backups. Android allows you to set File Transfer (MTP) as your permanent default USB configuration.

Why Set File Transfer as Your Default USB Mode?

Automating your USB connection protocol streamlines your daily workflow when managing files across devices:

  • Instant PC Recognition: Your computer immediately mounts your Android internal storage in File Explorer without requiring you to unlock the phone and swipe through menus.
  • Eliminate Repetitive Prompts: Saves you from constantly pulling down the notification shade and tapping Charging this device via USB > File Transfer every single time you plug in.
  • Seamless Photo Backups: Allows automatic photo syncing software, desktop backup utilities, and media players to detect your phone storage immediately upon connection.

Step 1: Enable Developer Options on Android

Because default USB protocol routing is a system-level configuration, the toggle is housed within Android’s hidden Developer Options menu.

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android smartphone.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom and tap About phone.
  3. Locate the Build number entry. On some Samsung devices, this is located under Software information.
  4. Tap Build number rapidly seven times.
  5. Enter your phone PIN, pattern, or fingerprint when prompted. A toast notification will appear stating: “You are now a developer!”.

Step 2: Change the Default USB Configuration

With Developer Options unlocked, you can now assign File Transfer as the primary USB behaviour:

  1. Navigate back to the main Settings menu.
  2. Tap System (or scroll to the bottom of the main menu on Samsung devices) and tap Developer options.
  3. Scroll down through the options to the Networking section.
  4. Tap on Default USB configuration.
  5. A list of USB modes will appear:
    • File Transfer / Android Auto (MTP): Select this to automatically mount your storage on computers.
    • USB tethering: Shares mobile data over cable.
    • MIDI: Connects musical instruments and synthesisers.
    • PTP: Transfers photos only as a digital camera.
    • No data transfer: Default charging only mode.
  6. Select File Transfer. The setting saves automatically.

Security Reminder for Public Charging Stations

Setting your default USB configuration to File Transfer is safe when connecting to personal laptops and trusted home computers. However, if you regularly charge your phone at public USB charging kiosks in airports, hotels, or cafes, remember to unlock your device only when necessary or use a USB data blocker adapter to prevent unauthorized access from public ports.
