Apple designed AirPods to integrate seamlessly with the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, utilizing a proprietary chip (the H1 or H2 chip) to enable instant pairing and automatic device switching. However, beneath that proprietary Apple magic, AirPods are still standard Bluetooth earbuds. This means you can pair them with almost any modern Android phone, including Samsung Galaxy devices, Google Pixels, and OnePlus phones.

Connecting AirPods to Android is straightforward, but because you are crossing ecosystem lines, you will lose a few of the premium features that make AirPods so popular among iPhone users.

Here is exactly how to pair your AirPods (including standard AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max) to an Android phone, and what features you will sacrifice by doing so.

How to Pair AirPods to an Android Phone

Ensure your AirPods are charged and your Android phone has Bluetooth enabled before you begin.

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android phone.
  2. Navigate to Connected devices (on Samsung phones, this will be under Connections).
  3. Tap on Bluetooth to open the Bluetooth settings menu.
  4. Ensure the Bluetooth toggle is turned On.
  5. Tap Pair new device (or “Scan” if your phone does not scan automatically). Your phone will begin looking for nearby Bluetooth signals.
  6. Take your AirPods and leave them inside their charging case. Open the lid of the case, but do not remove the earbuds. (If you have AirPods Max, simply take them out of their Smart Case).
  7. Locate the small, circular Setup button on the back of the AirPods charging case. (For AirPods Max, press and hold the noise control button).
  8. Press and hold the Setup button until the small LED light on the case begins to flash white. This indicates the AirPods are in pairing mode.
  9. Look at your Android phone’s screen. Within a few seconds, your AirPods should appear in the “Available devices” list.
  10. Tap the name of your AirPods on the screen.
  11. A confirmation prompt may appear asking if you want to pair. Tap Pair.

Your AirPods are now connected to your Android phone. In the future, as long as Bluetooth is on, they should automatically connect when you take them out of the case.

Which Features Work on Android?

When connected to an Android device, AirPods function exceptionally well as standard, high-quality Bluetooth headphones. You retain the following core functions:

  • Audio Playback: You can listen to music, podcasts, and videos with excellent sound quality.
  • Phone Calls: The built-in microphones work perfectly for standard phone calls and video chats (like Zoom or Google Meet).
  • Active Noise Cancellation (ANC): If you have AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, you can still toggle between Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode. Because you do not have an iPhone to change the setting via software, you must squeeze the stem of the AirPods Pro (or press the button on the AirPods Max) to switch modes physically.
  • Basic Media Controls: Squeezing the stem of the AirPods Pro (or tapping the side of older AirPods) will still play/pause music and skip tracks.

Which Features Are Lost on Android?

Because Android cannot communicate with Apple’s proprietary H-series chips, you lose the software-driven features that are exclusive to iOS:

  • Automatic Ear Detection: On an iPhone, pulling one AirPod out of your ear instantly pauses the music. On Android, the music will continue playing until you manually pause it on your phone.
  • Battery Status Checks: You cannot ask Google Assistant for the battery level, nor is there a native pop-up on Android showing the battery life of the case and earbuds. (You can, however, download third-party apps from the Google Play Store, such as CAPod or MaterialPods, to restore this battery indicator functionality).
  • Siri Integration: You cannot use the “Hey Siri” voice command, nor can you easily map the AirPods to trigger Google Assistant.
  • Customizing Controls: On an iPhone, you can change what a left-squeeze versus a right-squeeze does. On Android, you are stuck with the default media controls.
  • Spatial Audio: Apple’s immersive, 3D surround sound feature (Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking) requires an iOS device to function. You will only hear standard stereo sound on Android.
