How to Scan a QR Code on an iPhone (3 Easy Methods)

Quick Response (QR) codes have become an unavoidable part of daily life. Whether you are viewing a digital menu at a restaurant, connecting to a public Wi-Fi network, or checking in for a flight, scanning a QR code is the fastest way to bridge the physical world with the digital one. While early smartphones required you to download clunky, ad-filled third-party applications to read these codes, modern iPhones have scanning capabilities baked directly into the operating system.

Depending on whether the QR code is printed on a physical object in front of you or saved as an image in your camera roll, there are three distinct, native ways to scan a QR code using your iPhone.

Method 1: Use the Native Camera App

This is the fastest and most common method for scanning a physical QR code printed on a poster, menu, or business card.

1. Unlock your iPhone and open the default Camera application.
2. Ensure the camera is set to the standard Photo mode (not Video, Portrait, or Pano).
3. Point your iPhone’s camera directly at the QR code. You do not need to press the shutter button or take a photograph.
4. Hold the device steady for a second. A yellow box will automatically appear around the QR code as the camera recognises it.
5. A small yellow pop-up link will appear just below the QR code on your screen. Tap this link to open the destination (such as a Safari web page or a specific app).

Method 2: Add the Dedicated Scanner to Control Centre

If you find the Camera app method slightly slow or inconsistent in low-light environments, Apple includes a dedicated, hidden Code Scanner app that is highly optimised for reading codes.

Step 1: Add the Scanner to Control Centre

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Scroll down and tap on Control Centre.
3. Look under the More Controls list for an option named Code Scanner.
4. Tap the green + button next to it to add it to your active controls.

Step 2: Use the Code Scanner

1. Swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen (or swipe up from the bottom on older iPhones with a Home button) to open the Control Centre.
2. Tap the new Code Scanner icon (it looks like a QR code inside a viewfinder).
3. Point the camera at the code. This dedicated scanner is much faster than the standard camera app and will instantly open the link without requiring you to tap a secondary pop-up. It also features a flashlight button at the bottom for scanning in dark environments.

Method 3: Scan a QR Code from a Saved Photo

Sometimes you might receive a QR code via email or take a screenshot of one on a website. You cannot point your camera at your own screen, but iOS has a built-in feature called Live Text that solves this problem.

1. Save the image containing the QR code to your iPhone’s Photos app.
2. Open the Photos app and tap on the image to view it full screen.
3. Look at the bottom right corner of the image. You will see the Live Text icon (it looks like a small square with lines of text inside). Tap it.
4. The QR code will instantly become highlighted.
5. Tap directly on the highlighted QR code, and a menu will appear allowing you to open the link in Safari, copy the URL, or share it.
