How to Turn Off Significant Locations Tracking on iPhone

The Geographic Ledger Vector

Buried deep within the privacy settings of iOS is a feature called Significant Locations. By default, your iPhone silently tracks and records everywhere you go, noting exactly when you arrive, how long you stay, and when you leave. Apple states this data is encrypted and used to improve predictive traffic routing and photo memories. However, maintaining a granular, timestamped database of your home, workplace, and daily routines on your device represents a massive privacy risk if your phone is ever compromised.

How to Turn Off Significant Locations

You can completely disable this tracking matrix and purge the existing historical ledger from your device.

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Scroll down and tap on Privacy & Security.
3. At the very top, tap on Location Services.
4. Scroll to the absolute bottom of this incredibly long list of apps and tap on System Services.
5. Scroll down again and tap on Significant Locations. (Your iPhone will require Face ID or your passcode to access this sensitive menu).
6. At the top of the screen, tap the master toggle switch labelled Significant Locations to turn it Off.
7. To destroy the data it has already collected, look to the bottom of the same screen and tap Clear History.

The operating system will immediately delete your geographical ledger and cease all future background tracking of your daily routines.
