The native Apple Weather app on your iPhone is designed to provide highly accurate, hyper-local forecasts by continuously pinging your device’s GPS coordinates in the background. It uses this constant location data to send you timely alerts about incoming rain or severe weather in your exact vicinity. While incredibly useful, this continuous background tracking consumes a small but steady amount of battery life and allows Apple to build a detailed log of your daily movements. If you prefer to manually check the weather for specific cities without broadcasting your physical location, you can completely disable GPS access for the Weather app.
How to Block Location Access for the Weather App
You can revoke the app’s location privileges in the main privacy settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Privacy & Security (the icon with a white hand on a blue background).
- Tap on Location Services at the top of the menu.
- Scroll down through the alphabetical list of your apps until you find Weather (usually near the bottom).
- Tap on Weather.
- Under the “Allow Location Access” section, tap on Never.
The Weather app is now completely cut off from your iPhone’s location hardware. When you open the app, it will no longer display the “My Location” forecast automatically.
