How to Turn Off the App Store Password Prompt on iPhone

The Authentication Friction Vector

By default, Apple enforces a strict security policy requiring biometric authentication (Face ID/Touch ID) or a manual password entry every single time you attempt to download an application from the App Store. While this is absolutely necessary to prevent accidental credit card charges when purchasing premium software, the operating system aggressively enforces this identical security protocol even when you are downloading completely free applications. This creates unnecessary friction for users rapidly testing multiple free utilities.

How to Turn Off the Password Prompt for Free Downloads

You can instruct iOS to maintain its strict security barrier for paid purchases while completely removing the authentication requirement for software that costs zero dollars.

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Tap on your Apple ID profile name at the absolute top of the Settings list.
3. Tap on Media & Purchases.
4. A small menu will slide up from the bottom of the screen. Tap on Password Settings.
5. (Note: If you currently have Face ID enabled for App Store purchases, this menu option will be completely hidden. You must first go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and toggle off “iTunes & App Store” before proceeding with these steps).
6. On the Password Settings screen, look at the bottom section titled Free Downloads.
7. Locate the toggle switch labelled Require Password.
8. Tap the toggle to switch it to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).

The modification is instant. You can now navigate to the App Store and tap “Get” on any free application, and the download will initiate immediately without pausing to demand a fingerprint, a face scan, or a typed credential.
