The Social Obligation Vector
Apple’s iMessage platform features a distinct tracking mechanism known as Read Receipts. When enabled, the moment you open a text message, the sender’s device immediately updates the status from “Delivered” to “Read,” complete with a precise timestamp. While useful for confirming the receipt of critical information, it creates an intense social obligation to reply immediately. If you read a message during a meeting but cannot reply for several hours, the sender knows definitively that you are ignoring them.
How to Turn Off Read Receipts
You can instruct the iOS operating system to sever this communication feedback loop, ensuring senders only ever see the generic “Delivered” status.
1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Scroll down the main list until you locate the Messages app icon (the green speech bubble) and tap it.
3. Scroll down the Messages configuration screen.
4. Locate the toggle switch labelled Send Read Receipts.
5. Tap the toggle to switch it to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).
This acts as a global master switch. From this moment forward, no one will know exactly when you read their messages. However, if you want to maintain your privacy globally but still provide read receipts to a single, specific person (like a spouse), you can open their specific conversation thread, tap their name at the top, and manually enable “Send Read Receipts” exclusively for them.
