The Disappearing Recordings
The Voice Memos app on your Mac (which syncs via iCloud with your iPhone and iPad) is an excellent tool for recording lectures, interviews, and quick musical ideas. However, if you delete a recording by mistake and go back a month later to recover it, you might find that the “Recently Deleted” folder is completely empty. This is because macOS has a default setting that automatically purges your deleted Voice Memos after exactly 30 days. If you use Voice Memos for critical archival purposes, this invisible deadline can lead to devastating data loss.
How to Disable the 30-Day Purge
You can change the settings in the Voice Memos app to ensure that deleted recordings stay in the “Recently Deleted” folder indefinitely, forcing the app to wait for your explicit permission before permanently destroying the files.
1. Open the Voice Memos application on your Mac.
2. Look at the menu bar at the very top of your screen.
3. Click on Voice Memos (right next to the Apple logo).
4. Select Settings (or Preferences on older versions of macOS).
5. A small settings window will appear. Look for the dropdown menu labelled Clear Deleted.
6. Click the dropdown menu and change the setting from “After 30 Days” to Never.
Understanding iCloud Syncing Implications
It is absolutely critical to understand that Voice Memos are deeply tied to your iCloud account. Because they sync across devices, the “Clear Deleted” setting is universal. If you set your Mac to “Never” delete memos, but your iPhone is still set to delete them “After 30 Days,” your iPhone will trigger the deletion across your entire Apple ecosystem.
If you use multiple Apple devices, you must manually change this setting on every single device:
On your iPhone/iPad:
1. Open the Settings app.
2. Scroll down and tap on Voice Memos.
3. Tap on Clear Deleted.
4. Change the checkmark to Never.
With all devices set to “Never,” your deleted recordings will sit safely in the digital trash can until you manually click the “Erase All” button.
