How to Stop Websites from Asking to Send Notifications in Safari on Mac

Every time you visit a new news publication, retail storefront, or blogging platform in Safari on macOS, an alert sheet frequently drops down from the address bar stating: “example.com would like to send you notifications”. Having to manually dismiss these permission requests on nearly every newly visited domain introduces constant interruption to everyday browsing.

Apple includes a dedicated master privacy setting in Safari that completely disables website notification prompts, automatically suppressing permission requests without breaking notifications for sites you previously approved.

Disabling Notification Prompts in Safari Settings

To stop websites from prompting for push notification permissions:

  1. Open Safari on your Mac.
  2. Click Safari in the top menu bar and select Settings… (or press Cmd + ,).
  3. Click the Websites tab along the top navigation strip.
  4. In the left-hand column, scroll down and click Notifications.
  5. Look at the bottom-right corner of the window for the checkbox labelled Allow websites to ask for permission to send notifications.
  6. Uncheck this box to disable future permission requests.

Once unchecked, Safari silently blocks all push notification requests from new websites in the background, freeing your browsing session from intrusive dialogue sheets.

Managing Previously Approved or Denied Websites

The Notifications pane also displays a complete list of all websites that previously requested alert privileges:

  • To revoke notification rights from an active website, click the drop-down menu next to its domain name and change the setting from Allow to Deny.
  • To completely wipe a site’s record from your history, select the website in the list and click the Remove button at the bottom of the table.

Configuring System-Wide Safari Notification Behaviour in macOS

If you wish to retain website permission prompts but prevent Safari notifications from playing sounds or showing banners on your desktop, adjust your macOS notification centre rules:

  1. Open System Settings > Notifications.
  2. Click Safari in the applications list.
  3. Toggle off Allow Notifications or customise the alert style between None, Banners, and Alerts.
