Your Apple Account (Apple ID) is the master key to your digital life. It holds your credit cards, your private photos, your emails, and your iCloud backups. A simple password is no longer enough to protect this data. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) ensures that even if a hacker guesses your password, they cannot access your account without also having physical access to your trusted Apple devices.
How to Enable 2FA on an iPhone or iPad
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your Name and Profile Picture at the very top of the Settings menu.
- Tap on Sign-In & Security (on older iOS versions, this is called “Password & Security”).
- Tap Turn On Two-Factor Authentication.
- Tap Continue.
- You will be asked to enter a trusted phone number. This is the number Apple will send a text message or automated phone call to if you ever need to verify your identity.
- Enter the verification code that is texted to your phone number to finish the setup process.
How to Enable 2FA on a Mac
- Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen.
- Select System Settings (or System Preferences).
- Click your Name and Profile Picture at the top of the sidebar.
- Click on Sign-In & Security.
- Click Turn On next to Two-Factor Authentication and follow the onscreen instructions to verify your trusted phone number.
How It Works Going Forward
Once 2FA is turned on, whenever you buy a new device or try to log into iCloud.com on a web browser, entering your password will not be enough. Apple will instantly push a six-digit verification code to the screens of your already trusted devices (like your current iPhone or Mac). You must type that six-digit code into the new device to approve the login.
