By default, Microsoft Edge saves every PDF, installer, and image you download straight into your primary Windows “Downloads” folder located on your C: Drive. Over time, this single folder can become a chaotic mess, and worse, it can quickly consume all the storage space on your primary SSD. To stay organized, you can easily force Edge to save files to a different folder, an external hard drive, or prompt you to choose a specific location every single time.
How to Change the Save Folder
You can adjust this behaviour directly within the Edge browser settings.
- Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
- Click the three horizontal dots (…) in the top-right corner of the window to open the main menu.
- Click on Settings near the bottom of the list.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Downloads.
- Look for the section titled Location. It will currently show your default path (e.g.,
C:\Users\YourName\Downloads). - Click the Change button next to it.
- A standard File Explorer window will pop up. Navigate to the new drive or folder you want to use, select it, and click Select Folder.
How to Ask Where to Save Each Time
If you prefer strict organization and want to categorize your files as you download them (e.g., putting tax PDFs in a Finance folder and game installers in a Games folder), you should enable the manual prompt feature. Right beneath the Location setting in step 5, toggle the switch labelled “Ask me what to do with each download” to the On position.
