How to Automatically Clear Your Recycle Bin on a Schedule in Windows 11

When you delete a file in Windows 11, it doesn’t actually disappear; it simply moves to the Recycle Bin. If you constantly work with massive video files or 3D models and forget to right-click and “Empty” the bin, you will eventually run out of hard drive space. Instead of relying on your memory, you can configure Windows to automatically permanently delete old files from the Recycle Bin on a recurring schedule.

How to Automate the Recycle Bin

We can accomplish this using the built-in Windows 11 Storage Sense feature.

1. Open the Settings app by pressing Windows Key + I on your keyboard.
2. In the left-hand sidebar, ensure you are on the System tab.
3. In the main window, click on Storage.
4. Under the “Storage management” section, click directly on the words Storage Sense (do not just click the toggle switch next to it, you need to open its dedicated menu).
5. Ensure the master toggle switch at the top for Storage Sense is turned On.
6. Scroll down to the “Temporary Files” section.
7. Look for the dropdown menu labelled Delete files in my recycle bin if they have been there for over:.
8. Change the dropdown menu from “Never” to your preferred timeframe, such as 14 days or 30 days.

Now, Windows will quietly monitor your Recycle Bin in the background. If a deleted file sits in the bin untouched for 30 days, the operating system will permanently erase it to free up your storage space automatically.
