Have you ever felt your phone buzz in your pocket and wished you knew exactly who was calling without having to look at the screen? Your iPhone allows you to create completely custom vibration patterns and assign them to specific contacts. This way, a rapid “tap-tap-tap” can mean it is your boss calling, while a long, slow pulse means it is a family member. It is a subtle but genuinely useful accessibility and privacy feature that most iPhone users never discover.
Why Custom Vibration Patterns Are Useful
Beyond the novelty, custom haptic patterns serve practical purposes:
- Silent Environments: In meetings, cinemas, or libraries where your phone must be on silent, you can still distinguish between an urgent call from a colleague and a casual text from a friend without ever looking at your screen.
- Accessibility: For users who are hard of hearing, a distinctive vibration rhythm can carry more useful information than a generic buzz.
- Privacy: If your phone is face-down on a desk and you want to know if a message is worth interrupting your work for, a distinctive vibration tells you immediately.
How to Create a Custom Vibration Pattern
The vibration pattern editor is hidden several menus deep in Settings, but once you find it, it is straightforward to use.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap on Sounds & Haptics (on older iPhone models without haptic engines, this may simply say “Sounds”).
- Under the “Sounds and Haptic Patterns” section, tap on Ringtone. (You can also create patterns for Text Tone, New Voicemail, and other alert types by tapping the relevant option instead.)
- At the very top of the screen that appears, tap Haptics (or “Vibration” on older iOS versions).
- Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the list of preset patterns and tap Create New Vibration.
- Record Your Pattern: You will see a large grey recording canvas. Tap and hold your finger on the screen to create your rhythm. A short tap creates a brief buzz, while pressing and holding creates a longer, sustained vibration. Experiment freely — there is no limit to how creative you can be.
- When you are satisfied with your rhythm, tap Stop in the bottom right corner.
- Tap Play to preview how it feels, or tap Record again to start over. Once you are happy, tap Save in the top right corner.
- Give your creation a descriptive name (for example, “Heartbeat,” “Boss Calling,” or “Family”) and tap Save again to confirm.
How to Assign the Pattern to a Specific Contact
Creating the pattern is only half the process. Now you need to link it to the specific person in your contacts list.
- Open the Contacts app on your iPhone (or open the Phone app and tap the Contacts tab at the bottom).
- Find and select the person you want to assign the custom vibration to.
- Tap the Edit button in the top-right corner of their contact card.
- Scroll down through the editing options until you see Ringtone. Tap it.
- At the top of the Ringtone screen, tap Haptics (or “Vibration”).
- Scroll down past the list of default system patterns until you reach the Custom section at the bottom. Your newly saved pattern will appear here.
- Tap the pattern name to select it and preview the vibration. Then tap Done in the top-right corner.
- Tap Done again to save the contact. From now on, whenever that specific person calls or messages you, your iPhone will buzz with your unique custom rhythm.
Managing and Deleting Custom Patterns
To delete a custom vibration pattern you no longer need, navigate back through Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone > Haptics and scroll to the Custom section. Swipe left on the pattern name and tap Delete. Note that deleting a pattern will cause any contacts that were assigned to it to revert to the default system vibration.
