How to Enable Desktop Notifications for Gmail

If you rely on Gmail for your business or personal correspondence, missing an urgent message can be costly. While the Gmail smartphone app provides instant push notifications, the web version behaves differently. Unless you actively have the Gmail tab open and are looking at it, you will likely miss incoming emails.

Fortunately, you can configure your browser to send push notifications directly to your Windows desktop or Mac screen. However, this process requires changing settings in two different places: within Gmail itself, and within your web browser’s permission settings. Here is how to ensure you never miss another important email.

Step 1: Turn on Notifications Inside Gmail

The first step is to tell your Gmail account that you actually want it to push alerts to your computer. You can choose to be notified about every single email that arrives, or only messages that Google determines are “Important.”

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to Gmail.
  2. Click the Gear icon in the top-right corner, then click See all settings.
  3. Ensure you are on the default General tab and scroll down until you find the Desktop Notifications section.
  4. Select one of the following options:
    • New mail notifications on: You will receive an alert for every message that arrives in your Primary inbox.
    • Important mail notifications on: You will only receive alerts for emails that Google’s algorithm marks as important.
  5. Scroll to the very bottom of the page and click Save Changes.

Step 2: Allow Browser Permissions (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari)

Even though you told Gmail to send notifications, your web browser will actively block them by default as a security measure against spam. You must grant the browser permission to display these pop-ups.

For Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge:

  1. Look at the address bar at the top of your browser where it says mail.google.com.
  2. Click the padlock icon (or the settings icon) located directly to the left of the URL.
  3. In the dropdown menu that appears, locate Notifications.
  4. Change the toggle or dropdown menu from “Ask” or “Block” to Allow.
  5. Reload the Gmail tab if prompted.

For Apple Safari (macOS):

  1. With Gmail open, click on Safari in the top menu bar (next to the Apple Logo).
  2. Select Settings (or Preferences) and click on the Websites tab.
  3. Scroll down the left sidebar and click on Notifications.
  4. Find mail.google.com in the list on the right and change the dropdown box to Allow.

Troubleshooting: Check Your Operating System Settings

If you have followed both steps above and you still are not receiving desktop alerts, your computer’s operating system is likely blocking them globally. Both Windows and macOS have “Do Not Disturb” features that suppress all notifications.

  • On Windows 11: Press Windows Key + I to open Settings. Go to System > Notifications. Ensure that the master “Notifications” toggle is turned On, and verify that “Focus Assist” or “Do Not Disturb” is turned off. Scroll down and ensure your specific web browser (e.g., Google Chrome) is also allowed to send notifications.
  • On macOS: Open System Settings and click on Notifications. Scroll down to find your web browser (Safari or Chrome) and ensure “Allow notifications” is toggled on. Also, click the Control Centre icon in the top-right of your menu bar to ensure that “Focus” (Do Not Disturb) is currently inactive.

With all three layers (Gmail, Browser, and OS) configured correctly, your desktop will immediately alert you the moment a new message hits your inbox.
