How to Use the Reachability Feature to Use a Massive iPhone with One Hand

Modern iPhones, specifically the Pro Max models, feature massive 6.7-inch displays. While these gigantic screens are incredible for watching videos and reading articles, they are physically impossible to navigate with one hand. If you are holding your phone with your right hand, trying to stretch your thumb all the way to the top-left corner to tap a “Back” button will almost certainly cause you to drop the device. To solve this, Apple engineered a hidden accessibility feature called “Reachability.”

What is Reachability?

Reachability is a software trick that mathematically splits your iPhone screen in half. When triggered, the entire user interface—including your apps, the Safari search bar, and the top navigation buttons—physically slides down to the bottom half of the display. This places the absolute top of the screen perfectly within the natural resting radius of your thumb.

How to Enable and Use Reachability

This feature is usually turned on by default, but it is deeply hidden inside the Accessibility menu.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
  3. Under the “Physical and Motor” section, tap on Touch.
  4. Ensure the toggle switch for Reachability is turned ON (green).

Now that the feature is active, triggering it requires a very specific, subtle gesture.

  • On an iPhone with Face ID (no Home button): Look at the horizontal white line at the very bottom edge of your screen. Place your thumb slightly above this line, and quickly swipe down toward the charging port.
  • On an iPhone with a Home button (Touch ID): Do not press the button. Instead, lightly double-tap the physical Home button.

The entire screen will instantly slide downward. You can easily tap the back button or the Safari URL bar with your thumb. The moment you tap the screen, the interface will automatically slide back up to its normal, full-screen position.
