The URL Protocol Routing Vector
The macOS Darwin kernel is mathematically hard-coded to route all `http://` and `https://` protocol requests directly to Apple’s native Safari daemon. If you click a hyperlink embedded within an email, a PDF document, or a terminal output, the WindowServer will instantly spawn Safari, regardless of whether you have Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox installed on your solid-state drive. To optimize your workflow for a third-party rendering engine, you must instruct the core OS registry to rewrite its fundamental URL routing protocol, binding all web payloads to your preferred browser.
How to Change Default Browser on Mac
Apple engineered the routing architecture to be highly centralized, allowing you to execute the override via a single, simple drop-down matrix within the master System Settings, rather than requiring complex terminal injections.
1. Phase 1: The Prerequisite Installation:
* Before you can execute the override, the target browser (e.g., Google Chrome, Firefox, or Brave) must be physically installed on the machine and located within the master `/Applications/` directory.
2. Phase 2: Summon the Master Configuration Registry:
* Click the stark Apple Logo located in the absolute top-left corner of the master menu bar.
* Select System Settings from the drop-down matrix.
* (If you are operating on macOS Monterey or an older legacy kernel, this will be labelled “System Preferences”).
3. Phase 3: Target Acquisition (Desktop & Dock):
* In the left-hand navigation sidebar of the Settings window, scroll down slightly and click explicitly on Desktop & Dock.
* (Legacy macOS: Click the “General” icon in System Preferences).
4. Phase 4: The Execution Trigger (The Protocol Rewrite):
* Scroll down the main pane until you locate the specific row labelled Default web browser.
* By default, this parameter is locked to “Safari.”
* Click the drop-down menu.
* The OS kernel will query the `/Applications/` directory and populate the list with any software it recognizes as a valid HTML rendering engine.
* Select your target payload (e.g., Google Chrome).
* The Mathematical Result: The override is instantaneous. You do not need to reboot the machine. The macOS URL routing registry is now permanently rewritten. The next time you click a hyperlink in the Mail app, the OS will mathematically bypass Safari and violently execute the launch sequence for your newly assigned primary browser.
