How to Stop macOS from Automatically Enabling Do Not Disturb

The Silent Treatment

macOS includes a powerful “Focus” feature (formerly known as Do Not Disturb) designed to help you concentrate by silencing notifications. However, macOS can be overly aggressive in attempting to anticipate when you need focus. By default, it might automatically enable Do Not Disturb when you plug your Mac into an external display, or it might try to enforce a “Sleep” schedule based on your iPhone’s bedtime settings. If you are waiting for a critical email or a Slack message while presenting to a monitor, having macOS silently block all notifications without your knowledge is highly problematic.

Taking Control of Focus

To ensure you never miss an important alert and stop macOS from automatically enabling Do Not Disturb based on inferred schedules or activities, you must disable the automated Focus triggers.

Click the Apple logo in the top-left corner and select System Settings. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Focus. On the right-hand panel, you will see a list of your Focus modes (like “Do Not Disturb,” “Sleep,” or “Work”). Click on Do Not Disturb first. Scroll down to the section labelled Set a Schedule. If there are any automatic schedules listed here (e.g., “From 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM” or “When using an external display”), click on them and select the option to Delete Schedule or simply toggle them off. Repeat this process for any other Focus modes listed to ensure macOS only silences notifications when you manually click the icon in the Control Center.
