How to Change Your iPhone Passcode to a 4-Digit Number

By default, Apple requires you to set a 6-digit passcode when you first configure a new iPhone. While six digits provide stronger mathematical security against brute-force attacks, it can be slightly annoying to type out every time Face ID or Touch ID fails to recognize you. If you prefer convenience over maximum security, iOS still allows you to revert to the classic, faster 4-digit passcode style that was standard on older iPhones.

How to Switch to a 4-Digit Passcode

You can change the length of your passcode directly within the Settings app.

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Scroll down and tap on Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode if you have an older iPhone with a Home button).
3. The screen will prompt you to enter your current 6-digit passcode to gain access to this secure menu. Type it in.
4. Scroll down the menu until you find the option labeled Change Passcode. Tap it.
5. Again, you must enter your old 6-digit passcode to prove your identity.
6. The screen will now ask you to “Enter your new passcode.” Do not start typing yet. By default, it is still expecting six digits.
7. Look closely above the number keypad. You will see a small, blue link that says Passcode Options. Tap this link.
8. A menu will pop up from the bottom of the screen. Select 4-Digit Numeric Code.
9. The input field will instantly shrink from six blank circles down to four.
10. Type in your new 4-digit passcode.
11. The screen will ask you to verify the new passcode by typing it a second time.
12. Your iPhone may freeze for a few seconds as it securely updates the encryption keys on the device. Once it finishes, your new 4-digit code is active.

A Warning About Security

Before making this change, you should understand the security tradeoff. A 6-digit code has 1,000,000 possible combinations. A 4-digit code has only 10,000 possible combinations. If someone steals your phone, a 4-digit code is significantly easier for them to guess by watching your hand movements or looking for smudges on the glass. Ensure your 4-digit code is not easily guessable (avoiding obvious choices like 1234, 0000, or your birth year).
