How to Change the Text Size on Your iPhone

The default text size on an iPhone is optimized for the average user, but it may not be ideal for everyone. If you find yourself squinting to read messages or, conversely, if you feel the text is unnecessarily large and wastes screen space, iOS provides a simple way to adjust the font scaling. Apple’s “Dynamic Type” feature ensures that when you change the text size in your main settings, the new size automatically applies to all compatible apps across your entire device, including Mail, Messages, Notes, and most third-party applications.

How to Adjust the System-Wide Text Size

Changing the global text size only takes a few taps within the Settings app.

1. Unlock your iPhone and open the Settings app.
2. Scroll down and tap on Display & Brightness.
3. Tap on Text Size.
4. At the bottom of the screen, you will see a slider.
   • Drag the slider to the left to make the text smaller, allowing more content to fit on the screen.
   • Drag the slider to the right to make the text larger and easier to read.
5. The text on the screen above the slider will instantly adjust, providing a live preview of how the new size will look.

Once you are satisfied with the preview, you can simply tap the “Back” button or swipe away the app. The new text size is instantly applied system-wide.

How to Make Text Even Larger (Accessibility Features)

If you slide the Text Size slider all the way to the right and still find the text too difficult to read, Apple provides even larger font options within the Accessibility menu.

1. Open the Settings app.
2. Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
3. Tap on Display & Text Size.
4. Tap on Larger Text.
5. At the top of the screen, toggle the switch for Larger Accessibility Sizes to the ON position (the switch will turn green).
6. A new, extended slider will appear at the bottom. You can now drag this slider much further to the right to enable significantly larger text sizes designed specifically for users with severe visual impairments.

Using Bold Text for Better Contrast

Sometimes the issue isn’t the size of the text, but the thickness. If the thin default font is hard to read against certain backgrounds, you can enable Bold Text.

1. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness.
2. Toggle the switch for Bold Text to the ON position.
3. Your iPhone screen will briefly flash, and all system text will instantly become thicker and darker, significantly improving readability without requiring you to increase the actual font size.
