How to Mute a Noisy Email Thread in Gmail

We have all been trapped in one: an email thread involving dozens of coworkers where everyone feels the need to click “Reply All” to say “Thanks!” or “Got it!” Long after the conversation has ceased to be relevant to your job, your phone continues to buzz every five minutes with useless notifications.

Instead of manually deleting every new message or creating complex filters, Google built a dedicated feature into Gmail specifically to solve this problem: the Mute button.

What Does Muting an Email Do?

When you “Mute” an ongoing conversation, Gmail automatically archives the thread. Crucially, as new replies arrive from your coworkers, those new emails will completely bypass your Inbox. You will not receive a push notification on your phone, and the emails will not clutter your unread list. They are silently filed away into your archive.

(Note: The only exception is if someone explicitly adds your email address directly to the “To:” or “Cc:” line in a future reply, which overrides the mute and brings the thread back to your attention).

How to Mute an Email Thread on Desktop

You can mute a conversation quickly from a desktop browser.

  1. Open Gmail in your web browser.
  2. Check the small square box to the left of the noisy email thread in your inbox list. (You can also do this while actively reading the email).
  3. Look at the top toolbar (where the Archive and Delete buttons are located) and click the Three-dot menu icon (More).
  4. From the dropdown menu, select Mute.

The entire conversation will instantly vanish from your inbox.

How to Mute an Email Thread on Mobile (iOS/Android)

The process is nearly identical on the Gmail smartphone application.

  1. Open the Gmail app on your phone.
  2. Tap to open the noisy email thread.
  3. In the top right corner of the screen, tap the Three-dot menu icon. (Ensure you tap the three dots at the very top of the screen next to the envelope icon, not the three dots next to the sender’s name inside the email itself).
  4. Tap Mute from the menu.

How to Unmute a Conversation

If you realise you muted a conversation prematurely and need to follow the updates again, you can reverse the process.

  1. Type is:muted into the Gmail search bar and press Enter. This displays all conversations you have ever silenced.
  2. Select the conversation you wish to restore.
  3. Click the Three-dot menu icon again and select Unmute.
  4. The conversation will be restored to your active inbox.
