Imagine you are watching a tutorial video on Safari or reading a long PDF document on your iPad, and you suddenly need to jot down a phone number or an idea. In the past, you would have to minimize your app, open the Notes app, create a new note, type your thought, and then switch back. Apple completely eliminated this friction by introducing Quick Note.
What is Quick Note?
Quick Note acts like a floating digital sticky note. It sits on top of whatever app you are currently using, allowing you to write, type, or paste links without losing your place. When you are done, it minimizes away, saving your thoughts automatically.
How to Summon a Quick Note
There are several ways to bring up a Quick Note depending on whether you are using your fingers, an Apple Pencil, or a connected keyboard.
1. Using your Finger or Apple Pencil (The Swipe Method)
This is the most popular and fluid method.
- Place your finger or Apple Pencil in the extreme bottom right corner of your iPad screen.
- Drag diagonally toward the center of the screen.
- A small white square will peel away from the corner. Let go, and the Quick Note window will pop open, ready for typing or drawing.
2. Using Control Center
If you have a case that makes swiping from the corner difficult, you can add a button to the Control Center.
- First, go to Settings > Control Center.
- Tap the green + next to Quick Note to add it to your active controls.
- Now, whenever you swipe down from the top right corner of your screen to open the Control Center, just tap the little notebook icon with a squiggly line to open a Quick Note.
3. Using a Magic Keyboard
If you use an external keyboard with your iPad, you can summon a Quick Note exactly as you would on a Mac:
- Press the Globe Key + Q simultaneously.
Adding Contextual Links (The Best Feature)
The smartest feature of Quick Note is that it knows what app you are currently looking at. If you open a Quick Note while browsing a website in Safari, or looking at a location in Apple Maps, a button will appear at the top of the Quick Note saying “Add Link.”
Tapping this button embeds a rich link directly into your note. Even better, when you revisit that same website days later, a small thumbnail of your Quick Note will pop up in the corner of the screen, reminding you of the notes you took about that specific webpage.
Where Do Quick Notes Go?
When you tap “Done” (or just swipe the note away to the side of the screen), it is automatically saved.
- To find all your past notes, open the main Apple Notes app.
- At the very top of your Folders list, you will see a dedicated folder named Quick Notes.
Conclusion
Quick Note transforms the iPad from a simple consumption device into a powerful research and multitasking tool. Once you get used to the bottom-right swipe, you will wonder how you ever managed without it.
